Description

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a parish church dating from the 15th century. It is constructed of flint with ashlar and some brick dressings, topped with concrete tiled roofs. The church features a western tower, an aisleless nave with a south porch, and a chancel.

The tower is three storeys high, with staged diagonal buttresses, two-light traceried bell-openings, and a crenellated parapet adorned with flush work and carved finials at the corners that represent the symbols of the Evangelists. The window tracery was renewed in the 1850s. Inside, there is a 15th-century chancel arch with semi-circular responds and a wave-moulded head, as well as a tall 15th-century tower arch with plain jambs and a moulded two-ordered head. The chancel contains an angle piscina and former rood stairs on the north side of the nave.

A notable feature of the church is the fine 15th-century chancel screen, which has painted dado figures of saints and consists of seven bays with crocketted ogee arches and Perpendicular spandrel tracery. The original arch-braced nave roof remains intact. Other furnishings include a western gallery, pulpit, reredos, and an arch-braced chancel beam, dating from around 1850. The church is listed grade I, particularly for its chancel screen.
