Description

Hill House is an 18th-century farmhouse constructed of red brick, with a colourwashed rear elevation. It has a steeply-pitched roof covered in black-glazed pantiles. The building is two storeys and has attics, arranged in an L-shaped plan. The main south-facing facade is symmetrical with three bays, featuring sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor sashes are tripartite, with segmental arches interrupting the first-floor platband. A central doorway has side lights and a half-glazed, panelled door with glazing bars, topped by a moulded architrave with corner paterae. Above the doorway is a semicircular canopy supported by two traceried iron panel-columns with modillions. Crow-stepped gables are present on the east and west sides, featuring moulded brick kneelers. An axial stack, offset to the west, has four linked chimney shafts, the tops of which have been rebuilt. The base of the stack has a coat of arms in a recessed panel. An internal stack with three shafts is on the east gable. A 20th-century window replaces a first-floor window on the east gable, and there are two blocked attic openings. The colourwashed rear wing has three bays with sashes and segmental arches with keyed arches over the ground floor openings. A four-panel entrance door is at the north-east corner, and there's a platband at floor level. An axial stack, offset to the north, has six square, linked shafts. A crow-stepped north gable is present. The west gable features two figure 9 tie-irons and a panel with arms in the gable apex. A gabled stair outshut is on the north wall, flanked by single-storey lean-tos. There are two gabled attic dormers. The north range has altered ground floor openings and two more dormers.
