Description

The Thatched Cottage is a house from the 16th century, constructed with a timber frame, rendered and colourwashed, and featuring a brick plinth and a thatched roof. Originally an open hall, it now has 1½ storeys and attics, comprising 2½ cells and a chimney bay, with the floor and stack added in the early 17th century. The main facade faces east and includes an off-centre axial stack to the right, with a doorway in front of the stack. There are three 3-light casements with pintle hinges, and two gabled and thatched dormers with pantile surrounds, each containing similar 2-light casements. A Perspex loggia lean-to at the front has no architectural interest.

The right gable to the north features a small 3-light opening near the apex, while the left gable to the south has a lean-to under pantiles and a 3-light opening above. The rear includes one dormer. Inside, the inserted stack is now enclosed to the north, with a stair located in front of the stack. There is a half bay to the left with a timber framed partition to the left bay and a central timber framed passage across the half bay. The left and right cells have inserted ties with bar and nicked chamfer stops, and side braces extend above floor level to the wall plate. The wall posts to the front and rear wall plates have jowl tops and peg holes for former ties. The stair continues from the inserted first floor to the high attic floor below the collars, which features a butt purlin roof with curved braces.
