Description
Colney Hall is a late 18th century house located on Colney Watton Road. It features an attached orangery and was reduced by 2 or 3 bays and a storey around 1960. The house is constructed of colourwashed brick, while the orangery is made of colourwashed ashlar. It has a modern pantiled roof and stands two storeys high with one gabled projection. The building includes two impressive Venetian windows with free-standing columns that have Corinthian capitals on the inside, along with other original sash windows that have glazing bars. There is a verandah, a balcony, and large semi-circular headed windows added around 1960. The exterior also showcases channelled stucco quoins. The orangery consists of three bays with large semi-circular headed windows featuring glazing bars, a pedimented centre bay flanked by engaged columns with unusual Tuscan capitals, and a balustrade with flanking double pilasters. Inside, the space has been transformed into a grotto with a central fountain, and there are some fine 18th century chimneypieces in the main house.
