Description

Bowthorpe Hall is a large house that has been converted into a school. It dates back to the 17th century, with its facade updated around 1700. The building is constructed of red brick with a rendered plinth and features a T-shaped plan. It has two storeys and a symmetrical main facade with a six-window range. The entrance includes a panelled door, which may have originally been a double-leaf, set within a moulded wooden architrave and flanked by rusticated Ionic pilasters beneath a pediment. Above the door is a coved niche that holds a bust of a Roman Emperor, situated in a slightly projecting bay with rusticated brick quoins.

The facade has three ground and first-floor windows on either side of the entrance, some of which are blind with painted glazing bars. These windows are sashes with intersecting glazing bars, all set under flat gauged brick arches. The eaves cornice features dentils and egg and dart decoration beneath carved modillions. There is a contemporary facade at a right angle to the left, which includes a French window and one first-floor sash window, flanked by blind recesses with painted glazing bars. The main facade has an irregular buttress at the right end, with original quoins and 20th-century brick repairs, suggesting the presence of a now-demolished wing. The rear of the building has three stepped gables, one of which features kneelers on a projecting stair tower. The interior was not inspected during the re-survey.
