Description
The Church of St. Andrew is a Grade II* listed building located on Colney Watton Road. It features a late 11th-century round western tower and an aisleless nave, with a chancel added in the 14th century. The church underwent a comprehensive restoration in the late 19th century. It is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings, topped with slate roofs. The tower has two blocked double-splayed windows and 19th-century bell openings, along with flat quadrant pilasters. The northwest angle of the nave has rubble quoins and one blocked double-splayed window above the porch. There are two 14th-century south nave windows, each with two lights and foiled soufflets, while all other tracery is from the 19th century. The south door, dating from the 14th century, features a moulded arch, and there is a blocked 16th-century north door with chamfered brick voussoirs. The 16th-century south porch includes brick traceried windows. The tower arch, chancel arch, roofs, and most furnishings are from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Inside, there is a 15th-century polygonal font adorned with symbols of the Evangelists and scenes of the Crucifixion and Flagellation. The chancel contains a chest tomb of John Tomson, who died in 1575, featuring fluted pilasters, simple volute capitals, and a palmette frieze. Additionally, there is a small Chalice Brass commemorating Henry Alikok, who died in 1502, set into the chancel floor, and a 17th-century panelled chest.
