Description

Grey Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with a 19th-century roof. It features a timber frame that is rendered and colourwashed, with a combination of slates and pantiles. The structure originally had an open hall but now consists of two cells with an additional bay to the east. To the right, there is a 1½ storeyed lofted addition that is also timber framed and rendered, topped with pantiles. The gable ends have copings, and there is a chimney bay between the first and second bays with a rebuilt shaft, as well as a large internal stack to the right with a rendered shaft.

The principal facade faces south and has three bays over two storeys. The ground floor includes three 2-light casements, while the first floor features three 3-light casements. There is a 19th-century gabled porch with a slate roof located between the second and third bays. The rear of the building has various additions made from flint and pantiles.

Inside, the timber frame is exposed in the first and second cells, which have an inserted floor. The tie beams are adorned with quarter mouldings and lambs tongue chamfer stops. The fireplace in the first cell is enclosed, while the fireplace in the central cell has been rebuilt. There is a large fireplace in the third cell. The upper floor has a steeply pitched 16th-century roof with collars and 17th-century raking dormers. In the 19th century, the walls were raised to create eaves at the level of the dormer lintels, and a shallow pitched roof was added over the existing roof.
