Description
Poplars is a farmhouse dating from 1586, as indicated by renewed datestones at the bases of the chimneys. It features a rendered timber frame with brick gable-ends and has a T-shaped plan due to a contemporary service extension at the rear. The building has two storeys with an attic and a five-bay facade that includes a central two-storey porch. The porch has a 19th-century two-leaf front door with a bracketed hood above it, and there is a three-light 18th-century window above the door. Decorative pendants hang from the projecting ends of the wall-plate.
The fenestration includes five four-light mullion and transom windows, along with three three-light windows without transoms. Some windows have metal casements, and there are surviving leaded lights. The roof features two sloping dormers with three-light casements, crow-stepped gables, and three partly rebuilt octagonal chimney shafts at each end. Each stack is flanked by pairs of small openings that have moulded brick stuccoed pediments and stuccoed reveals. Two windows on the north side retain their original single diamond mullions, and there are pairs of oculi in the attic with raised stuccoed reveals.
The two-storey service wing has been partly rebuilt and includes a 20th-century lean-to. Inside, a winding stair beside the south stack survives from the first floor to the attic. There is a dog-leg main stair to the north of the center, featuring an acorn newel knop and a substantial handrail of elliptical section. The high-quality frame consists of four bays with an eight-bay clasped purlin roof that includes wind bracing. Some joists have angle rolls on one side only, and there are several original doors with fielded centre panels.
