Description

The building at 2 Market Hill comprises two distinct sections. The eastern portion dates from the 17th century and was subsequently altered. It is a two-storey and attic structure with one dormer window and a gable-end window, covered with pantiles. The exterior is stuccoed and lined, with an overhanging first floor on the east side. It has a splayed angle, and an entrance at ground floor level. There are four flush frame sash windows; glazing bars remain in two of them on the left side. A ground floor window on the left has central glazing bars and a case with consoles. To the right is a shop front with a wooden case, enriched consoles, and a cornice.

The western portion, likely built in the early 18th century, sits on higher ground. It is three storeys high, with three windows, and has a stuccoed, lined exterior. A cill band marks the second floor, and a dentil eaves cornice runs along the top. Sash windows are found on the second floor, while casement windows are on the first floor, both with architraves. Consoles support the cornices above the first-floor windows. A pedimented window is located centrally on the facade. A projecting shop front on the ground floor features a wooden case, splayed to a central entrance set back behind a full-width "loggia" featuring tall Ionic columns and a balustraded balcony above, which was added later. A small door to the side, accessed by steps and wrought iron railings, is also present. The building occupies an important position and is part of a notable group with numbers 1A, 1B, 1C, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
