Description
Avon Cottage is a cottage dating back to the 16th century, with later alterations. It is constructed with a timber frame, rendered and colourwashed external surfaces, wattle and daub panels, and some brickwork, all under a thatched roof. Originally possibly a single-cell cottage, it now comprises three cells, arranged on a single storey. A brick stack is located at the right end of the cottage, and a second, off-centre stack has 19th-century octagonal shafts. Doorways are positioned in cells one and three. The cottage has late 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars, though part of the wall in cell three is now colourwashed brick. A 20th-century outshut is attached to the rear, and a further addition sits to the right return under a pantile roof. Inside, the roof features collarless rafters; a timber partition between bays two and three is partly infilled with wattle and daub and has a boarded rear door with pintle hinges. Cell one contains a large 16th-century stack fireplace and partition wall. The central cell is narrower, with a mid-19th-century stack attached to the back of the first cell's stack, and a segmental fireplace arch with an early 19th-century cast iron firegrate. The stack to the right gable (cell three) is rendered, likely originally similar to that of cell one but cut down and narrowed in the 19th century.
