Description
Avenue Farm Cottages is a pair of cottages that were formerly one house, dating from the 19th century. The cottages feature a red brick facing that covers an earlier timber frame, with brick return gables from the 18th century. The roof is reed thatched, while a wing to the west has a pantiled roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands at 1½ storeys high.
The front has a range of four widely spaced windows, which include 19th century and 20th century casements. The ground floor openings have segmental heads, and there are four dormers on the east side. There are two entrance doors, one of which has a 20th century porch. The gables are parapeted with brick tumbling-in.
Inside, there is an internal chimney stack at the north gable and an off-centre axial stack. The later pantiled wing at the north-west corner features a large external stack on its north wall and has 20th century casements in the gable. The structure includes arch-braced tie beams to the north and south of the axial stack, which support square unmoulded crown posts and a collar-purlin. The roof has a butt-purlin design with closely-set principal rafters. The first floor features tie beams and joists that have stepped run-out stops, and one tie beam has barred chamfer-stops.
