Description
Nos. 11-13 Church Road is a terrace of three houses built in 1951 by the former Loddon Rural District Council, designed by architects Tayler and Green. The houses are two storeys tall and constructed of brick, with No. 11 in black, No. 12 in yellow-grey, and No. 13 in red, featuring a yellow-brown gable end and red quoins. The roofs are pantiled with zig-zag cut wooden bargeboards, and there are three brick chimneystacks topped with pitched concrete copings and clay pots. The rainwater pipes run straight from the eaves without swan necks, except for the left-hand side where they have been replaced.
The houses have a wide frontage with four first-floor windows featuring square module glazing and top-hung casements arranged as 2 light, 1 light, 2 light, and 4 lights for each house. The ground floor includes three-light casements on the left and a recessed porch on the right, which has been recently infilled on Nos. 12 and 13. An ornamental trellis made of white-painted timber remains only on No. 11, located to the left of the porch. This block is set back from the road, facing a green, with an access road leading to a garage court to the west. Together with Nos. 14-16 and Nos. 17-18, these houses represent the second phase of village housing at Bergh Apton. The completed scheme received a Civic Trust Award in 1957 and a Housing Medal in 1961, showcasing a fine example of the architects' work and serving as a sensitive and self-contained extension to the existing community, effectively utilizing its woodland setting to create a new village green.
