Description
St Mary's Chapel, formerly known as Chantry House, is a building that dates back to the 15th century and consists of remains from Ashwell Church, which was converted into a house, likely in the 18th century. The building's plan indicates it may have originated in the 12th century, featuring a nave and chancel. Although there are no visible ancient details on the exterior, the 15th-century arch-braced roof of the nave is still intact.
The exterior is made of plastered flint and brick, topped with a pantile roof that has gabled ends. The nave is two storeys high and has two windows, which are 18th or 19th-century three-light casements. There is a central glazed door and an internal brick chimney stack located at the west end. The east end features a painted brick wing that was formerly the chancel; it was rebuilt in the 18th century and is also two storeys tall, with one window and a pantile roof that has a coped gable end, along with 18th or 19th-century casements.
