Description
16 Damgate Street is an early 17th-century house that now functions as both a residence and a shop. The building features a mix of partly timber framing and mainly colourwashed brick, with a roof covered in plaintiles and pantiles. It has a lobby entrance plan and stands two storeys tall.
The entrance includes a panelled door located to the right of centre, which has been displaced by an early 20th-century butcher's shop display window to its left. Beneath the window, there are decorative tiles depicting a sheep and a bull. The doorcase is reeded, and to the right of the door is a mid-18th-century three-light casement window. On the first floor, there are two smaller casements, one with three lights and the other with four lights. The building has a gabled roof with a ridge stack positioned above the door.
To the immediate left of the entrance, there is a covered carriageway with a pantiled roof, accessed through timber double-leaf doors. Inside, the first floor features tie beams, rafters, and corner braces that are part of the frame, with arched braces supporting the ties in the north wall.
