Description

Railway Cottages, 1-5, are a terrace of five former railway workers' cottages built in the mid-19th century, specifically 1847, by Grissell & Peto, who were the builders and architects for the Norfolk Railway Company. The cottages are constructed of red brick with yellow brick detailing, and have slate roofs. They include three brick ridge chimneys. The cottages are single-storey with an attic, and feature a ten-window range, with the end units projecting forward. Each cottage has a panelled door in the center, with a projecting porch featuring a four-centered head and pediment, flanked on either side by casement windows. A plain brick string course runs along the facade. The roof has gabled half-dormers, many of which have been rebuilt. The cottages form part of a group of planned workers' dwellings in Norwich, arranged around a roughly triangular common drying yard paved with flint and cobbles.
