Description
Nos. 7 to 13 on Orford Place are offices and shops built in 1904 by J. Owen Bond. The building features a slate roof and is situated on a corner site with three storeys plus an attic. It has a square corner turret with blind windows, diagonal buttressing, and a domed roof topped with a finial. The main facade is five bays wide and curved, with a corner bay and three additional bays facing the yard. The shopfronts were added in the later 20th century.
The first floor showcases Renaissance details, including rustication that continues up the pilasters. It has semi-circular arched sash windows with margin lights. The three central bays are recessed and supported by Ionic columns on the second floor, which hold up a frieze and a heavy cornice. The frieze bears the name Burlington Buildings. The second floor features sash windows with eared architraves and balconies that are supported by the keystone of the first floor and reclining figures.
On the attic level, there are three windows with flat arches, flanked by Ionic columns that support open segmental pediments. The end attic windows are recessed and have rusticated surrounds with exaggerated keystones and open bracketed pediments, also supported by rusticated Ionic columns. Inside, the open well staircase has turned balusters and newel posts decorated with wheat-ear drops, pendants, and carved brackets, along with ironwork balustrading on the first floor landing. The principal first floor room features a fine plasterwork ceiling, elaborate window and door surrounds, and a pedimented fireplace surround.
