Description
Music House is a former house that has been converted into an educational institute, dating from the 12th century onwards. The building features flint and brick construction with pantile roofs. The facade facing King Street is two stories high, with three-story gable ends. It has five irregularly spaced windows on the second floor. A 20th-century door is set into a 12th-century door opening at the left-hand gable end, with another 20th-century door to its right. There are two large six-light mullion and transom windows with pediments, centrally placed, along with two smaller six-light mullion and transom windows above, which are partly blocked on the right side. Sash windows and casements are present elsewhere on the building. A pediment with a missing cill is located above the two right-hand sash windows, and there is a moulded string course between the central windows.
Inside, there is a 12th-century stone-built undercroft beneath the left-side gable, which represents the extent of the original house. This undercroft has two compartments connected by a door: the first compartment, accessed from the street, features roll-moulded and hollow chamfered ribs, while the rear room has two bays of groin vaulting supported by flat-section transverse arches, along with the remains of a spiral stair in the northeast corner. On the south external wall of the undercroft, there are remains of a large respond with a ricked base, as the rest of this phase of the building was destroyed by a 15th-century brick-built three-bay undercroft that runs parallel to the street line.
