Description

The Church of St Etheldreda is a former parish church, now used as a studio. It dates back to the 12th century, with 14th and 19th-century restorations by E. Boardman. The church is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings, and has a plain tile roof. It consists of a west tower, a nave, and a chancel. A south porch is also present. The west tower is truncated and features an octagonal top with brick quoins. The nave has four bays with reticulated tracery, largely renewed in the 19th century on the north side. A Norman doorway is located on the south side, featuring weathered capitals on the outer order, with 19th-century shafts and inner order. A blocked north door retains the remains of a Norman arch and a horizontal zig-zag band to the left. The chancel has two bays with 19th-century Y-tracery and an east window. A wall monument, originally from St. Peter Southgate, depicting groups of kneeling figures facing each other and framed by tapered pilasters, was removed and is no longer present.
