Description
Nos. 39 and 41, known as The Festival House, is a public house with a medieval undercroft located on St Andrew's Street. The building dates from the 19th century and features some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of red brick with a pantile roof and stands four storeys tall with three bays. The central entrance has a panelled door flanked by panelled pilasters supporting a plain architrave. The corner pub front at No. 41 includes a corner door and round-arched glazing bars, with a recessed door on the left side. There is a three-light casement window on the first floor to the left, supported by pilasters and consoles that hold a hood. Sash windows with vertical glazing bars appear elsewhere, particularly in the lower sashes on the first and second floors. Each corner features a tall pub sign, and the building is topped with a paired modillion cornice.
The interior of The Festival House includes a medieval undercroft dating from the 15th century, which has brick vaults and flint walls up to the springing level. The two eastern bays and the northern half of the adjoining bay have modern rendering and paint. The undercroft consists of four bays, each with quadripartite vaulting and double order ribs, showing a noticeable size difference between the eastern and western bays. The north wall of the two eastern bays has been thickened, and the current entry into the undercroft from the 17th-century cellar to the north is modern, replacing an earlier opening. The building is listed as Grade II* due to its significant medieval undercroft, which is part of an important group of medieval undercrofts within the city walls.
