Description
41-43 St Giles Street is a Grade II* listed office building designed by G. Skipper in 1906, with a later 20th-century addition at the rear. The structure is made of Bath stone with a marble plinth and outer columns, and features Portland stone elements. It stands three storeys tall and has five bays arranged in a pattern of A:B:C:B:A, with the central and end bays projecting in a Neo-Baroque style.
The central doorway is flanked by four Doric columns that support a curved broken pediment adorned with a cartouche. There are six Doric columns spanning the ground and first floors, which support an entablature with an open pediment over the central bay and pediments over the end bays. The ground and first floors have sash windows with glazing bars and raised surrounds, while the outer bays feature balconies at the first floor. The central first-floor window has a rusticated surround and a semi-circular arch. The second floor includes seven casement windows with glazing bars and eared and haunched surrounds, topped by a balustrade parapet with urns. Beneath No. 43, there are remains of a two and a half bay brick 15th-century undercroft.
Inside, the building has a T-shaped entrance hall with paired columns, a panelled staircase with marble columns and a coffered ceiling. The boardroom on the first floor features five panelled double-leaf doors, a fireplace with a scrolled pediment, a large French window leading to a balcony with a round pediment and swags, and a three-bay domed ceiling.
