Description
A pair of early 19th century houses, located on Barrack Street in Norwich. The houses were built in 1816 and are constructed of whitewashed red brick, with pantiled roofs – the front slope is black-glazed, and the rear slope is red. They are a one-up, one-down terrace, originally built without rear extensions.
The north front has two six-panelled doors, with a three-pane sash window to the right of the doorway in number 79, and a 4 x 2 pane window in number 77. There are two two-pane sash windows to the first floor. Fascia boards are above the windows. A central ridge stack is present. The rear elevation has a single-storey flat-roofed extension from the early 20th century, which incorporates a smoke-house. A pyramid-shaped smoke stack is present, and a secondary stack to its north. The main rear wall has one boarded sash window to each house.
Internally, a winder staircase remains in number 77, located north of the stack. The staircase in number 79 was removed to provide access between the two houses after they were converted into a single property in the late 19th century. In number 79, timber cupboard doors are positioned behind a 20th-century frying range. One two-pane rear window looks into the rear extension. Number 77 has a similar layout. The first floor of number 77 features a cast-iron hob grate within a timber surround, while number 79 has a boarded fireplace.
These houses are a rare survival, described as the last of their kind in Norwich, according to Stefan Muthesius’s 1982 publication, The English Terraced House.
