Description
The vaulted undercroft under Flats 7 and 9 is a Grade II listed structure dating from the early 16th century, with a subsidiary chamber added in the late 16th or early 17th century. The vaulted chamber has a roughly square plan measuring 150 centimeters on each side, with a vault apex height of 150 centimeters. It features brick vaulting supported by flint rubble walls. The chamber is set back approximately five meters from Rosemary Lane and was likely connected to an unvaulted cellar that has since been destroyed. In the late 16th or early 17th century, one half of the original four-centred vault was removed and replaced with another arch. In the early 19th century, external access was added, although the stairwell for this access is now mostly infilled. Half of the chamber is located beneath the ground-floor flat no. 7 on Rosemary Lane, while the other half was previously under no. 5, which has been recently demolished. The mid-20th century terraces that now occupy the site of the vault do not have any special architectural merit or interest.
