Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed parish church located on Warham Road in Binham. This 12th-century Romanesque church features a façade that combines two distinct 13th-century styles of plate and bar tracery. Constructed from flint with stone dressing and topped with a lead roof, the church originally served as part of a Benedictine Priory founded in 1091 as a dependency of St Albans. It has been retained for use as a parish church, with two additional nave bays, a crossing, and an East end that are now in ruins. The west front dates back to before 1244.

The ground floor and aisles showcase plate tracery, while the nave window is an example of the bar tracery style seen in Westminster Abbey. The façade features a tripartite nave and aisles, although the structure behind the aisles has been demolished. A large central four-light window, now bricked in, displays bar tracery with octofoil and sexfoils. The church includes a 16th-century bellcote and a nave with seven bays that illustrate the distinct Romanesque, Transitional, and Early English phases in the internal elevations at the arcade, gallery, and clerestory levels.

The current east wall is built up on the monastic pulpitum, which divides the two parts of the church. Inside, there is a simple hammerbeam arch-braced roof and a 15th-century font with seven Sacraments on a stepped base. The dado features only a 15th-century screen, with figures of saints visible through later stencilling. There are two stalls with misericorde and open work tracery backs to poppyhead benches, as well as arched, coved sedilia.
