Description
Abbey House is a 16th-century house, originally known as Abbey Farmhouse, located on the south side of Binham Warham Road. The building is largely flint with red brick dressings, topped with a red and black pantiled banded roof. The original L-shaped house was refaced around the 18th century and a rear wing was added to create a double-pile plan. Evidence of the earlier structure is visible in the southwest gables and stone eaves brackets located in the middle of the north front and the northwest gable, where filled-in mullioned windows and brick quoins mark the original layout. Around 1870, mullioned and transomed windows were added to a gabled wing on the right side and a canted bay on the left. A 2 1/2-story tower is situated in the angle of the left wing, featuring a porch with a pier, entablature, and substantial stone brackets, and a hipped pyramid roof. The interior includes a mid-17th century baluster staircase. A 19th-century single-story service wing extends to the rear, with a verandah on the north side and a re-cut stone arch door in the Early English style.
