Description
Sweetbriar Cottage is a house built around 1830 for the Gunton estate. It features rendered clunch with gault brick dressings and a thatched roof, which has a central brick ridge stack with four octagonal flues. The cottage is designed in an elaborate cottage orne style and is a single storey with an attic. The front has a two-window range of two-light leaded casements, with similar dormers above and a central door. An open verandah with a thatched roof runs the full length of the front, supported by wooden posts and featuring a gable in the centre. There are similar casements at both ends, with the left side having a part-glazed door and porch that likely overlooked a subsidiary gateway on the estate. The rear has an outshut with a catslide roof along its full length and decorative bargeboards throughout. Inside, there are back-to-back small open fireplaces with brick arches, plank doors, and an arched ceiling in the former dairy.
