Description

Gunton Tower is an observation tower and adjoining ranges built around 1830 for Lord Suffield. It is constructed of gault brick and features a lead roof. The central archway is flanked by concave side wings on the north and south fronts. The arch has a semicircular shape with a brick keystone and is supported by paired Doric giant pilasters, which are rusticated on their lower halves. Between each pair of pilasters is a square-headed window with cross glazing bars, and each light is tripartite. A band above the windows serves as the imposts for the arch. Above this, there are two oculi with radiating glazing bars, a plain cornice, and a balustraded parapet topped with ball finials.

Rising from the archway is a two-stage square tower. Each face of the first stage has a pair of semicircular-headed sash windows with radiating glazing bars, supported by sills on brackets and topped with a plain cornice. The second stage features square-headed tripartite sash windows, with the central part having a semicircular glazing bar. Flanking engaged Doric columns support a coved cornice, leading to a pyramidal roof with a flagpole.

On either side of the archway are curved single-storey wings with three bays, each having semicircular-headed windows with T-shaped glazing bars. The lower lights are tripartite, while the upper lights have radiating glazing bars. The wings also feature rusticated quoins, a plain cornice, and flat roofs. The building was restored around 1980.
