Description

The Stables is a late 18th-century stable block, likely designed by Samuel and William Wyatt, and some parts have been converted into dwellings. It is constructed of gault brick and features slate roofs. The building has a square plan with corner pavilions and archways at the center of the east and west ranges. The semi-circular brick arches are flanked by twin Tuscan columns that support a plain pediment, although the pediment on the east range has been rebuilt. There are recesses in the walls on either side with semi-circular heads. The end pavilions are two stories high and have 20th-century part-glazed doors and sash windows with glazing bars, along with first-floor lunettes that also have glazing bars. The courtyard elevation of the archway has rusticated brick pilasters that support a plain pediment. The openings of the east and west ranges facing the courtyard are under segmental arches, with some now serving as doors to the dwellings. One stable retains its fittings to the north of the east arch. The north and south ranges have openings under two orders of large segmental arches, with some areas converted into garages and others blocked with 20th-century sash windows. The north range also has two small segmental arched openings now fitted with 20th-century doors. An iron gate with a scooped head is located in the west arch, and there is a mounting block in the west archway.
