Description
Thwaite Hall is a house dating from the 17th century, which was extensively altered around 1800. It is constructed of brick with a pantile roof. The house has an L-shaped plan, with a porch to the west and an extension to the east, constructed around 1800 to form a T-shaped plan. An outshut is attached to the east. The west front has three bays and two storeys. The central bay features a two-storey porch with a round-headed doorway with a hood mould and a circular blocked opening with rendered reveals to the gable. There are 19th-century casement windows and the brickwork to the right is diapered. Two casements are set within larger, blocked square openings. The brickwork to the left of the porch is later. The left-hand gable return is not bonded-in, suggesting that this bay was once timber-framed. The left-hand gable has a different, steeper angle than the present roofline, and there is a gable end stack. To the right of this range is a projecting gabled wing, also diapered, with four blocked tall, narrow openings to the gable wall and two blocked square openings to the north face. It has a kneelered gable and a gable end stack. A diapered brick stack to the rear wall of this range has been partly rebuilt and incorporated into the outshut. The south front consists of the first two bays of diapered brick, with the remainder being from around 1800. The left-hand bay has tripartite sash windows with glazing bars under segmental arches. The second bay has a doorcase with fluted pilasters, a six-panel door with the top two panels glazed, and a casement to the stair. The first floor has a sash window with glazing bars. The third and fourth bays have a semi-basement with casements, and the main floor has sash windows with glazing bars, with smaller sash windows with glazing bars to the top storey. A right-hand gable end stack is present.
