Description

Northgate Hall is a farmhouse built in the 17th century and later altered between 1795 and 1799 by the architect Samuel Wyatt. The walls are made of gault brick and are whitewashed, while the roof is covered with black glazed pantiles. The farmhouse has an 'L' shape with a projecting eastern wing. The west front features five bays and is two storeys high. On the ground floor, there are four tripartite windows set under segmental arches, with sash windows that have glazing bars. The first floor also has sash windows with glazing bars, and there is a 20th-century porch. The door is half panelled and half glazed, with sidelights. A brick dentil cornice runs along the top of the building, leading to a hipped roof. There is a gault brick stack on the south gable and an off-centre stack on the north side. The north return is two storeys high with six bays and features a mid-19th century gault brick porch and a central stack. The rear wing is constructed from galleted cut flint with red brick quoins, and it has drip moulds above large filled-in rectangular window openings, suggesting that part of the house dates back to the 17th century or earlier. There is a cellar beneath this wing. Samuel Wyatt clearly rebuilt the house, extending it by one room in the west front while retaining the rear wall and the west wing, where he inserted the staircase.
