Description
27 High Street is a 17th-century building that has been encased in 18th-century painted brick. It features a very steep roof with one hipped end covered in black-glazed pantiles. The building has a brick eaves cornice and stands two storeys tall with an attic. There are brick string courses at the floor levels. The first floor has seven windows with plain brick architraves and sashes that do not have glazing bars. To the left of the ground floor, there are two similar windows, while the rest of the ground floor has a large Victorian shop front with pilasters, a fascia, and a moulded cornice topped with iron cresting and a moulded signboard at the centre. The building has three flat-roofed dormers, two of which have moulded casings for casements with glazing bars, while the third is modern. The right-hand side of the first floor has a rebuilt front that matches the original design. The south end elevation is made of unpainted red brick and features two similar windows on the first floor and one window on the ground floor, along with a segmental-headed doorway on the left. Inside, there is a good early 17th-century staircase with heavy moulded balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newels with finials, leading up to the first floor and attic.
