Description

The Church of St George, built between 1932 and 1933 by H. J. Green, replaces and incorporates elements from an earlier church. It is constructed of flint with brick and stone dressings, topped with a red tiled roof. The church features a two-bay nave, north and south transepts, a two-bay chancel, a north porch, and a south vestry. Notably, the north porch and the south transept include stone from the previous church, particularly in the west doors.

Inside, the nave contains three partly re-assembled Perpendicular octagonal columns with bases and octagonal capitals. The chancel has two Perpendicular half column piers, and its niches are made up of various odd fragments. There is a 15th-century stone octagonal font adorned with crowned M and T monograms on the shaft, and the bowl features symbols of the Evangelists, three coats of arms, and a depiction of the crucifixion, though all are damaged. A brass from 1568 mounted on the wall shows kneeling donors, alongside other brasses with partly classical and partly Gothic details, all located on the nave wall. Rood figures over the altar were created by Miss Lillian Dagless. The church has a trussed roof with central king posts and includes fragments and furnishings from the former Church of St George.
