Description
Severals Grange is a mid-19th century farmhouse constructed of red brick with a red pantiled roof. It is a two-storey, three-bay house featuring two ground floor and three first floor sash windows with glazing bars, all set beneath flat rubbed brick arches. The central entrance has a six-panel door. This farmhouse was built by William Skinner Phillipo, a farmer known for his independent views and opposition to landlords and the Game Laws. His initials, WP, along with a date (1854, now missing), are found on the purlin irons of the east gable. The building has a brick dentil eaves cornice, battlemented parapets, and two end stacks. Above the door is a mock coat of arms made of statuary marble, inscribed with "The Armorial bearings of W.S. Phillipo Esq," and signed by sculptor J Blyth of Fakenham. The coat of arms includes the phrases "Agincourt" and "Liberty and Fraternity." Phillipo claimed descent from the standard bearer of Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and from Matthias de Phillipeaux at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. He also constructed barns at this site and at Phillipo's Farm in Barney, Fulmodeston.
