Description
No 1 is a cottage located on Church Street in Stiffkey, likely dating from the 17th century, with an 18th-century addition to the east. The building is constructed of flint and brick, featuring brick dressings. The eastern section from the 18th century has brick dentil eaves and consists of one storey and an attic. The ground floor includes two 19th-century sash windows, two small windows, and a blocked door. There are also two 19th-century gabled attic dormers and a small inserted window. The roofs are covered with pantiles and have coped gable ends.
To the west and slightly set back, the 17th-century part of the cottage contains a form of cruck truss, which may be re-used. This truss has ogee-shaped blades of light scantling, measuring only 4 inches, that rise to a yoke where the blades are pegged. The base of the blades rests on a beam, and it is likely either a full cruck or raised crucks that have been cut short, rather than an upper cruck. The remaining roof members are relatively modern. The interior features a spine beam and two cross beams with stop-chamfers and run-out stops. The arrangement of beams at the west end suggests the presence of a fire hood, which is quite unusual for Norfolk.
The building is graded II* due to its unique cruck truss. Whether this truss is re-used or altered from its original form, no other cruck trusses have been found in Norfolk. There is also documentary evidence indicating that Stiffkey Moot Hall was located on this site in the late 16th century.
