Description
No. 8 Tuesday Market Place is the south wing of a very large 16th-century house that is arranged around a courtyard at the rear, with No. 10 forming the northern part, which is now used as offices. The front block was rebuilt in the late 18th century and is made of rendered and colourwashed brick, topped with a slate roof and plain tiles at the rear. The building has two storeys and a dormer attic set on a plinth course. There is a 4-centred carriage arch at the rear, positioned to the left and now featuring an entrance doorway. To the right, there are two sash windows, and on the first floor, there are three sash windows, all with glazing bars. A string course runs below the upper windows. The gabled roof was raised in the 20th century to sit on the former parapet and features two flat-topped dormers with fixed windows. An internal gable-end stack is located to the south.
In the courtyard, a former carriageway exits under a 4-centred chamfered 16th-century brick arch, which is immediately to the left of a two-storey wing that forms the south range of the original court. There is a 20th-century door in the archway. The cross wing was rebuilt in the early 18th century and has 20th-century details on the ground floor. The upper floor includes one blind window and one sash window with glazing bars.
Inside, little remains except for an 18th-century floral plaster cornice in the front rooms on the first floor. The roof was replaced in the late 20th century.
