Description
Gainsborough House is a house located on South Street in Hockwold cum Wilton. It dates from the late 17th century and was refaced in the 18th century. The building features a timber frame, with brick and flint construction, and has a thatched roof. It has a lobby entrance plan and a whitewashed two-storey facade. The central entrance consists of a 20th-century door and a gabled porch, which is set within a timber-framed bay with light scantling and small framing. There are segmental 20th-century casement windows to the right and left, as well as two similar first-floor casements in reduced openings.
The north bay is recessed behind the facade line and has a timber frame on the first floor. The roof is gabled and hipped to the north, with a central ridge stack. The north bay was likely originally jettied to the north but has been underbuilt with brick and flint, featuring four 20th-century windows. The walls of the rear elevation have been rebuilt at ground level, but the rest is constructed of chequered brick and flint. There is a 20th-century door and porch to the left, with two widely spaced 20th-century casements on each floor set within reduced openings. The south gable is made of 18th-century stock brick, with the gable head constructed of chequered brick and flint, featuring brick tumbling. Inside, the chimney breasts have roll and jewel stopped chamfered bressumers.
