Description

The Hockwold cum Wilton war memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, located in the churchyard to the south-west of the entrance to the Grade I-listed Church of St James. The memorial is made of polished grey granite and features an obelisk that rises from a two-tiered, chamfered square plinth, which is set upon a single-stepped, chamfered square base. This structure is elevated on a narrow square platform.

On the north face of the obelisk, the dates 1914/1919 are displayed within a wreath. Below this, on the upper tier of the plinth, the principal inscription reads: "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO SERVED IN HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES AND DIED IN THE GREAT WAR." The lower tier of the plinth bears the words "THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIFE EVEN UNTO DEATH" REV. XII 4.

The names of twenty-two individuals who died in the First World War are inscribed on the east and west faces of the upper tier of the plinth. The 23rd name is located on the south face, beneath which is the dedication for the Second World War, featuring the dates 1939/1945 within a wreath. The names of three individuals who died in this conflict are listed on the lower tier of the plinth.

All lettering and wreath designs are incised and painted gold.
