Description
The building is a windmill, which includes an attached bakery, miller's house, and Humphrey Cottage, located on Mill Lane in Great Bircham. The towermill was constructed in 1846 and features tarred English bond brick with a wooden cap roof. It stands five storeys tall, with a circular sixth storey cap. The cap and sails were restored between 1976 and 1983, and there is a stone plaque on the south face that reads "GH 1846." The interior is fully operational, containing both re-used and replaced machinery. Attached to the west is a single-storey bakehouse made of red brick with a red pantiled roof, which includes a mid-19th century side flue oven. The miller's house, also attached to the west, is two storeys high and has three bays; it is currently divided into two separate occupations. The entire complex is noted for its group value.
