TF 60 SW CRIMPLESHAM DOWNHAM ROAD
3/5 Folly 70m south-west of Crimplesham Hall

Folly. 1840's. Gault brick and ashlar with slate roofs. In form of ruined rectangular area to north of which is Campanile in Italian style. Many re- used medieval fragments including 3 C14 doorway arches, one C13 doorway arch and several early Perpendicular windows. Free standing arched doorway to south with diagonal buttresses leads to open courtyard approached through similar arched doorway. Arched door to west opens to ornamental lake, above which is 3-light cusped early Perpendicular window. Further 2-light cusped windows to south wall. To north Campanile entered through undercut C13 doorway. Above is re-set C14 cross-legged seated figure beneath canopy, the whole set within triangular-headed niche and of fine quality. Further arched doorways to east and north of Campanile. Tower rises in 3 stepped stages pierced at intervals by lancets and with occasional corbelling. Open timber bellcote under spirelet. First floor room with barrel vault, fireplace with re-used jambs decorated with shields and emblems in trefoils. Mosaic floor of cobbles and horses' teeth, some split longitudinally and others transversely, the whole forming a hollow-sided octagon.
