Description
The folly, located 70 meters south-west of Crimplesham Hall, dates from the 1840s and is constructed from gault brick and ashlar with slate roofs. It features a ruined rectangular area, with a Campanile in Italian style to the north. The structure incorporates many re-used medieval fragments, including three 14th-century doorway arches, one 13th-century doorway arch, and several early Perpendicular windows.
A free-standing arched doorway to the south, supported by diagonal buttresses, leads to an open courtyard, which is accessed through a similar arched doorway. An arched door on the west side opens to an ornamental lake, above which is a three-light cusped early Perpendicular window. The south wall has further two-light cusped windows.
To the north, the Campanile is entered through an undercut 13th-century doorway. Above this doorway is a re-set 14th-century cross-legged seated figure beneath a canopy, set within a triangular-headed niche of fine quality. There are additional arched doorways to the east and north of the Campanile. The tower rises in three stepped stages, pierced at intervals by lancets and featuring occasional corbelling. An open timber bellcote is situated under a spirelet.
Inside, there is a first-floor room with a barrel vault and a fireplace with re-used jambs decorated with shields and emblems in trefoils. The mosaic floor is made of cobbles and horses' teeth, some split longitudinally and others transversely, forming a hollow-sided octagon.
