Description

Bexwell Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, which was refronted in the mid 18th century and remodelled and extended in the early 19th century. The original late 16th century structure is built of flint and ironstone rubble, featuring brick quoins and dressings. The rear wall and the early 19th century rear wing are constructed in Flemish bond brick. The building has a gabled pantile roof, with a late 16th century truncated lateral stack to the right and a late 16th century left end stack that was finished in mid 18th and 19th century brick. There is also an early 19th century ridge stack on the rear wing.

The farmhouse has a three-unit plan that was extended to an L-plan with the addition of the rear left wing in the early 19th century. It stands two storeys tall and has a three-window range. The mid 18th century segmental brick arches are located over a central 19th century four-panelled door (two of the panels are glazed), flanked by 12-pane sash windows and mid to late 19th century three-light casements on the first floor. A similar sash window is found on the right side wall. The rear wing features a two-storey, four-window range with segmental arches and timber lintels above 20th century doors and casements that have glazing bars.

Inside, the front range includes early to mid 19th century panelled doors and an early 19th century stick-baluster staircase with a curved handrail. The interior also features orolo-moulded beams. The room to the right contains two reset early 16th century foliate-carved beams, a late 14th to early 15th century roll-moulded and carved beam, and a set of scribed 16th century joists. The room at the rear has a mid 18th century panelled door set within a 19th century architrave, topped by a mid 18th century moulded cornice over a late 19th century door. The beams are said to have originated from West Dereham Abbey House.
