Description

Wolferton Station gates, piers, and railings at Downside were constructed around 1898. They feature wrought iron and brick, with carstone and limestone detailing. The low gates, which open forward, are 3.7 meters wide and adorned with scroll work above the top rail. On either side of the gates are attached panels that match in style and dimensions. These panels are connected to tall brick piers decorated with carstone and topped with stone caps, each capped by a lantern similar to those on the gate piers of the original station.

To the right of the gateway, there are forward splays from the lantern piers, while the left side has four small piers and four wrought iron panels, with the fourth pier topped by a stone ball. The right side features four piers and an additional five piers that extend along the former railway line to the downside platform, with ten wrought iron panels.

The walls, piers, and wrought iron panels at the rear of the lantern piers mirror the front, with the left side having seventeen piers and seventeen panels, the eleventh pier also topped by a stone ball, and the right side consisting of five piers and five panels attached to the angle of Downside. This gateway serves as the exit from the downside Royal Waiting Rooms and is part of a group with Downside.
