Description
This is a probable 18th-century building with later alterations, situated on the west side of High Street, facing the north side of the Market Place. It is two storeys and has an attic. The main facade is red brick, with the addition of a splayed bay extending through the ground and first floors on the left side. The roof is steeply slated and hipped at the east end, featuring two gabled dormers. A wooden splayed bay is located on the first floor to the right, and the windows are largely sash windows with centre glazing bars.
The front of the building that used to be a bank has a heavy, stuccoed Doric order at ground floor level, with a massive segmental open pediment above the arched corner entrance. The south side features a buff brick face and rusticated quoins. The ground floor of the bank front has heavy Doric pilasters and a continuous entablature. The first floor retains two windows with glazing bars. A gabled dormer is also present. The building holds an important position and forms a group with numbers 8 to 10 on Market Place, and with numbers 26 to 38 (even) and 50 on High Street.
