Description
The Watlington War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is situated in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which is a Grade I-listed building. It is prominently located to the left of the path that leads from the road to the church. The memorial features a Latin cross-head that rises from the collar of a tall and slender cross shaft. The collar is decorated on the front and rear with a monogrammed shield. The cross shaft is octagonal in shape and stands on a pedestal. The pedestal has a square base and an octagonal drum-like upper surface, with shouldered corners. It rests on a two-stepped base that is also square in plan. The plinth and the uppermost step of the base display inscriptions in incised lettering.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ AND OF/ 1939 – 1945." The names of those commemorated are recorded on the other faces of the pedestal and on the front riser of the upper step of the base.
