Description

Whittington War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of dark grey marble and is located in the churchyard of Christchurch on Whittington Hill, Whittington, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently positioned by the churchyard wall facing the road. It features a polished marble obelisk with a shaft consisting of two sections, set on a tall, narrow plinth that bears inscriptions, and has a two-tiered base.

The incised inscription reads: THE GREAT WAR/ A.D. 1914 – 1918/ ERECTED/ BY THE PEOPLE OF/ WHITTINGTON/ A.D. 1919/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN/ WHO FELL BRAVELY/ IN DEFENCE OF THEIR COUNTRY/ (NAMES)// 1939 – 1945/ (NAME).
