Description
Great Broughton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, located in the churchyard of Christ Church, Kirklea, Great Broughton, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned near the churchyard entrance and close to the west end of the church. The memorial consists of a slate monument divided into three main sections: a wall- or stele-like panel with a pointed tip, set on a four-sided plinth and a single-stepped base. The main stele section features a carved laurel wreath at the top and displays the inscriptions related to the First World War. The plinth, which may have been added after the Second World War, contains later inscriptions. All three sections have rough-hewn edges, and the inscriptions are incised and filled with black.
The inscription reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS' ALSO (NAME)// ALSO THOSE WHO FELL IN THE SECOND GREAT WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
