Description

The building comprises a row of almshouses located on Church Lane in Heacham. Dating to 1763, the structure was largely rebuilt using new materials in 1913. It is constructed with a carstone plinth, squared clunch walls, red brick dressings, and a red pantiled roof. The design adopts a U-plan with two returned wings and a central cross-wing. Numbers 18 to 24 form the central range, featuring ground-floor casement windows of 4 and 3 lights, and first-floor casements of single, 2, 3, and 4 lights, all wooden framed with glazing bars. The centre of the building has three brick arches with tile keyblocks, containing two boarded doors and a central open arch. The corners each have a boarded door. The returned wings, numbers 16 and 26, have gable ends with four single-light casements, quoins, and shaped parapet gables, with brick ventilation holes in the gables and paired diamond-pattern stacks on the apex. The returns display one ground-floor single-light casement and two 2-light casements, and on the first floor two single-light and two 2-light casements, all with boarded doors. There are six double shaft stacks to the centre, and one to the ridge of each wing. A forecourt is enclosed by a carstone wall.
