Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church that dates from the late 13th century, with additions from the mid 14th century and a rebuild in 1730. It is constructed from carstone and ashlar, topped with a slate roof, while the chancel features pantiles. The church originally included a tower, which was demolished in 1730.

The structure has a diagonal buttress on the north-west side and a flat buttress to the south-west, with an additional brick buttress added around 1730 at the west end. The west bell-cote is rendered. The south aisle has been removed, and the three-bay arcade is blocked, reusing two early Perpendicular windows with two lights each. The eaves have been rebuilt in brick, and there are three stepped buttresses. The chancel has a similar south window and a two-light Y window on the north side, but there is no east window. The east gable of the nave was rebuilt in brick in 1730, featuring tumbling, and there are three stepped buttresses on the north side of the nave, which includes one two-light window similar to the south and one three-light Perpendicular window from the 15th century with supermullions.

Inside, the chancel arch is supported by demi-columns with high polygonal bases and moulded circular capitals, which hold up a wave-moulded arch. There is a rere-arch to the north window. The nave roof, added in 1730, features tie beams, principals, and collars on arched braces, with two tiers of staggered butt purlins and windbracing in the upper tier.
