Description

The Hilgay War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It was restored in 2021. The kerbstones, fence posts, and chain link fence surrounding the memorial were added in 2021 and are not included in the listing. Additionally, a free-standing memorial plaque erected in 2009 to commemorate the aircrews who died in a crash in Hilgay during the Second World War is also excluded.

The memorial is made of stone and has an octagonal plan. It is located prominently within a triangular grassed area at the junction of Church Road and High Street. The memorial takes the form of a simple Latin cross that rises from a moulded knop atop a tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft stands on a square plinth, which is set on a three-stepped octagonal base. The entire structure is enclosed by an early 21st-century octagonal gravelled area, bounded by kerb stones and fence posts that support a contemporary chain link fence.

On the west side of the plinth, a modern plaque bears the First World War dedicatory inscription: "This Cross was erected in honour of the men of Hilgay who gave their lives for their King and Country in the Great War 1914 - 1919." Black plaques on the north, south, and west sides list the names of the men who died. The Second World War dedication is located on the base of the memorial, with the dates "1939 - 1945" carved in shallow relief on the west face of the top step, and the names of the men who died inscribed on the north-west and south-west faces of the middle step.
