Description
The National Westminster Bank, located at No. 23 Hall Quay in Great Yarmouth, is a bank building constructed between 1904 and 1906 by architect A.S. Hewitt. It features a brick structure with a stone facade and a slate roof, designed in the Edwardian Baroque style. The banking hall is a tall single storey, with a two-storey facade added for visual effect, which is only one room deep at the first floor.
The facade includes a wide range of windows and a narrow entrance bay positioned to the right of a window bay, both framed by rusticated quoins. The main window is a Venetian window supported by granite Ionic columns, topped with a rusticated arch and flanked by garlanded cartouches. The entrance bay features a polished granite door with a fanlight, flanked by a pair of rusticated Doric columns that rise to a swan-necked pediment. Above this is a circular window set within a garlanded cartouche.
The second floor is adorned with a balustrade, and the facade continues with wide and narrow bays separated by paired Ionic columns that rise to block entablatures. The left bay contains three rusticated windows, while the right bay has one. Above the left bay is a set-back segmental pediment with heavy dentilations, and the overall design is capped with a crenellated pediment.
Inside, the banking hall features marble Ionic pilasters that support a decorative coffered ceiling embellished with plaster devices.
