Description
A pair of shops with living accommodation above, built around 1890. The building is constructed of knapped flint with red brick detailing, and has a machine-tile roof. It is three storeys high, with a dormer attic. The two-window front features simple, original plate-glass shop fronts, each with three divisions and entrances set in canted, diagonally-placed corners, each covered by a small pediment. The shop fronts extend into returns, with some later brickwork to the south of number 76. The first floor has two canted bay windows in segmental-arched recesses. These windows have 16/2 main sashes and 8/1 side sashes, without horns. The second floor has a string course, vertical brick strips dividing it into six bays, and two unhorned sashes under segmental heads. The right-hand sash (number 77) retains its original 8/8 glazing bars, the other has been altered to 2/2. A decorative brick cornice is punctuated by six terracotta consoles above the vertical brick strips. The eaves soffit has terracotta roundels with a six-lobed design. The mansard roof has two dormers with segmental pediments, each with a two-light casement. The casements at number 76 have a 8+8 glazing bar pattern, while those at number 77 have a 3+3 pattern. Smaller pedimented dormers are located on the north and south roof slopes. Two large square stacks are present: one at the front (east) is of flint with brick detailing, the other is entirely brick.
