Description

The Tennis Pavilion at Wellesley Recreation Ground is a building constructed in 1890 by J.W. Cockrill, the Borough Engineer. It is made of red brick with applied timber studs and rails that create rendered panels. The roof of the enclosed part is covered with machine tiles, while the verandah has a corrugated asbestos roof.

The pavilion has a rectangular plan with canted east and west ends, a central cross gable, and an open verandah to the north. It is a single-storey structure featuring a north elevation that has nine bays of open verandah. The central three bays project forward and are supported by square timber posts with solid scrolled braces and chamfered corners. The centre of the north elevation features a half-glazed double door flanked by fixed two-paned windows on either side, with a timbered gable above. Additionally, there are four-panelled doors on either side of the centre, also flanked by fixed two-paned windows. The canted ends each have three unhorned sash windows. At the rear, there is a gentlemen's public urinal made of glazed brick, topped with an acetate sheet roof, and a blocked doorway leading into the pavilion.

Inside, the pavilion consists of three rooms. The east and west rooms serve as changing rooms, with the west room featuring low lockers that double as bench seats, while the east room includes toilet facilities behind a modesty screen. Four-panelled doors connect to the centre room, which has a timber counter and a boarded-over communicating door into the west room. All rooms are lined with timber planks.

The pavilion is part of a group that includes the Grandstand and Ticket Office.
